Gerald Huml

Colonel Gerald “Jerry” Huml, 84, died peacefully on May 11, 2024, in Blacksburg, Virginia.


Colonel Huml’s burial will be 12:00 PM Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at the Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, North Carolina with full military honors.


Colonel Gerald Frank Huml was born October 23, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Richard and Lillian Huml, the second son of their six children. He graduated from Cornell College in Iowa in June of 1961 with a BA in Physical Education and was immediately commissioned into the United States Marine Corps. Colonel Huml deployed twice to Vietnam, Okinawa, Berlin and many other locations. Major medals he received for his service to our country include the Legion of Merit Medal with Combat “V” and one star and the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” and three stars. In 1989 he was inducted into the Cornell College Athletics Hall of Fame for Men’s Track and Field, Football and Men’s Basketball.


Colonel Huml received a Master’s in Education from the University of Virginia (UVA) in 1973, after which he served as UVA’s Marine Corps ROTC instructor for three years. His love of teaching continued when he retired from the USMC in 1990 and served as the Marine Junior ROTC instructor at Highland Springs High School in Virginia for five years.


He and Ann spent many lovely years in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. In addition to being an outstanding athlete, Jerry Huml liked to fish, hunt and spend time at the beach. He loved popcorn and had a great sense of humor. He was always a very gracious host and made wonderful breakfasts.


He was a loving husband, father, warrior, and educator. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann, to whom he was married for sixty-one wonderful years. He is also survived by his three children and their spouses, Dina Hyde (David), Carrie Woodring (Earl), and Jerry (Amy); his five grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Colonel Huml to the Carolina Museum of the Marine, the Al Gray Civic Institute, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
