Obituary Master Gunnery Sergeant Frederick Earl Simmons, USMC (ret), 88, of Emerald Isle, died Friday, January 16, 2015 at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level. A memorial service with Masonic Rites and military honors will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, at Brooks Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy J. Havlicek officiating. Mr. Simmons was born on December 9, 1926 in Bristol County, MA to Stanley Covel Simmons and Mythle Doris Caswell Simmons. He served 4 years in the United States Air Force and 32 years in the United States Marine Corps retiring at the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. After retirement, he worked an additional 5 years in civil service. In 1973 he joined the Masons at Honolulu Lodge #409. In 1974 he joined the Scottish Rite and Sudan Shriners and became a 32nd degree Mason and was additionally a member of the Jesters. In 1982 he joined Ocean Lodge #405 in Morehead City. Mr. Simmons was a member of the Eastern Star, was Past Worthy Patron of the Morehead City chapter and also a member of the Beaufort chapter. Being an avid runner, at the age of 79 he completed his 79th marathon. He is survived by his daughters, Sherry S. Kittrell and husband, Mack, of Atlantic Beach, Wanda S. Styron and husband, Eddie of Atlantic Beach and Beverly A. Phillips of Morehead City; sister, Sue Miller of Wareham, MA; brother, Leavitt Simmons of Lakeville, MA; granddaughters, Cindy Hadley, Janie Fleming, Beth Davis, Becky Bibby, and Wendi Rhodes; great-grandchildren, Billy Harless, Kristi Harless, Brandon McCubbin, Tanner Davis, Carson Davis, Sawyer Davis, Kirill Hadley, Chandler Fulcher, and Chase Fulcher. In addition to his parents, his wife, Elsie Nelson Simmons, and brother, Herbert Simmons, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Sudan Shriners, 403 E.
