Forest Mangum

Obituary Forest Alton Mangum, 68, of Newport, N.C. died Monday, February 12, 2018 in Greenville, N.C. Born in Durham, NC, he was the son of the late Erbie William Mangum and Myrtle Lee Starling Mangum. After graduating from Northern High school in Durham, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1967-1969. After service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he attended St. Andrew Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, graduating in 1978 with a B.A. Degree in Business Administration. Despite being seriously injured in a car accident when he was 20 years old, leaving him a paraplegic, he went on to live a very full and active life. He enjoyed working in his metal shop on different projects, including a custom-made motorcycle that he could operate. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Newport NC Lodge 2194. Forest will be remembered by his daughter, Genia Mangum of Vanceboro, NC; his sister, Vaughan De Leigh Baldwin of Laurel, Maryland; several nieces and nephews; his sister-in-law Linda Harris and husband Robert; his good friend, Noriko Nakada; as well as many other friends. Forest was preceded in death by his brother, Erbie W. Mangum, Jr. and his sister, Carolyn Rigsbee. There will be no visitation or funeral services. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Youth Camps For Christ, Inc., 190 Mangum Lane, Littleton, N.C. 27850. Youth Camps For Christ, Inc. operates Camp Willow Run, a Christian Camp that was started in 1968 by the late Reverend Erbie W. Mangum, Jr. and his wife Linda.
