After high school, he joined the Coast Guard. He was stationed on a weather cutter out of Boston which was reassigned to Wilmington, NC. He was transferred to Coast Guard Station Fort Macon in 1967. There he met the love of his life, Dianne, and a group of friends who remain close to this day. Don is a gentle soul and a friend on sight. He loves the water and fishing but more than that he loves sharing fun times with family and friends. He became honorary "sister Nmi" while driving us on trips. While playing games, we always kidded him about his short arms, but with those arms he still could hug the entire world. He brought love and peace to many. He is survived by his wife, Dianne; daughter, Donna Harrington and husband Brian and their children Hannah and Brison all of Morehead City; son, Sean M. Conner and wife Jill and their son Ian of Two Harbors, CA; son, James (Jim) C. West and wife Sarah and their daughter Heather of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Susan Jones and husband Robert and their children Daniel, Micah, Andrew, Amyrose and Tristen, all of Carolina Shores, NC; brother, Robert Gagnon and wife Madeleine of Englewood, FL and their sons Paul and David; sisters-in-law, Beth Taylor of Morehead City, Jacquie Millsap of Kingston, TN and Grace Mason of Morehead City; he is additionally survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a slew of good friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
