Claudia Covington

August 21, 1930 — July 10, 2018

Obituary Claudia Wannamaker Covington of Atlantic Beach, NC died on July 10, 2018 in Charlotte, NC. The daughter of Alexander James Matheson Wannamaker and Mary Claudia Harvin Wannamaker, she was born on August 21, 1930 in Orangeburg, SC. Claudia was devoted to her family, her Church and countless pets; she was thoughtful to all. Claudia lived many lives during her 87 years. She asked a recent acquaintance not to count her husbands so we wont either. After graduating from Mount Vernon College and Kathryn Gibbs School, Claudia returned to Orangeburg where she worked at Orange Cotton Mills, a cotton manufacturing company owned by her father and known for the strand of orange thread woven in its twine. Always ahead of her time, Claudia was the only female in her class in textile production in the 1950s. Upon moving to the farmland outside of Chattanooga, TN, she changed to blue jeans and could be seen driving a vintage 1940s green pickup truck, wrangling calves, and milking cows. When she relocated to the Florida Keys, she became a boat captain and fell in love with scuba diving and the big open sky. Later, she loved her days spent helping to recruit top athletes at Duke University in Durham, NC. Finally settling in Atlantic Beach, NC, Claudia enjoyed tending her garden and volunteering her time at Carteret Health Care and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Claudia was predeceased by her parents and her infant son. Surviving are her children: Dia Steiger and her husband Paul of Charlotte, NC; Evelyn Frierson of Portland, OR; and Burton Frierson and his wife Ilze of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Matt Akins and his wife Scottie of Charlotte, NC; Jett Steiger and his wife Chelsea of Los Angeles, CA; Lyall Moore and her husband Will of High Point, NC; and Emma Claudia Frierson of Brooklyn, NY. Claudia had one great-grandchild, Maggie Akins of Charlotte, NC. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Morehead City at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 2005 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557 or Hospice and Palliative Care, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
