Claud Wheatly, Jr

Obituary Claud Roberson Wheatly, Jr., born July 3, 1918, died December 24, 2015 at Carteret Health Care, Morehead City. He was born in Beaufort to Claud R. Wheatly and Osey Garner Wheatly. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina and later graduated from the University of North Carolina Law School. He was licensed to practice in 1941. Shortly after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he joined the Army and served in the 178th Lightning Division. During the war his units were involved in the Battle of the Bulge, later he was in the lead elements of the 178th that discovered the Remagen Bridge still standing and his units helped secure the bridge for the American Troops to cross into Germany. His war-time experiences made a great impression on him and he never forgot them. After the war he came back to Beaufort, North Carolina and began practicing law and in 1946 married Alice Aiken. They had four children, Claud R. Wheatley, III (wife, Joyce), David A. Wheatly, Jule D. Wheatly and George E. (Eddie Bo) Wheatly (wife, Sandra). His wife Alice predeceased him in 2008 and his son, Jule in 2011 and daughter-in-law, Nancy in 2013. He is survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His is also survived by his sister, Carolyn (Kak) Wheatly Davidson, who resides in Jacksonville, Florida. As a lawyer he was well respected and well known throughout North Carolina. He practiced law in Beaufort for almost 70 years and was recognized by the North Carolina Bar Association and admitted into the General Practice Hall of Fame in 1989. He was in the first group of inductees. He was also admitted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1968, which represents the top 1% of attorneys throughout the country. He was very active in his community and political affairs. In addition to being an outstanding attorney and a civic leader, having served in various positions in Carteret County and on various State Boards. He was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church for 97 years and taught the mens Sunday School Class for 62 years. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and friend to many. He will be sorely missed. His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 2015 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church with the rector, the Rev. John Carlisto, officiating. The interment will follow in the church cemetery followed by a reception for family and friends in the Parish Hall adjacent to the church.
