Charles Tomlinson

Obituary Charles Ruffin Tomlinson, 70, of Newport died Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at his home surrounded by family and special "Angel", nurse Donna Hunt. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 22, at Newport Elementary School Gymnasium with the Rev. Ray Conner officiating. The interment with police officer funeral honors will follow at the David B. Garner Cemetery, Newport. He was born June 9, 1945 in Morehead City to John Battle Tomlinson and Jane Daniels Tomlinson. Mr. Tomlinson was a police officer for the Town of Newport from 1971 2003. He served as the Police Chief for the town from 1973 - 2003. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2003. Mr. Tomlinson also served in the 824th Heavy Boat Company of the Army Reserve. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Deborah Willis Tomlinson; children, Amelia Covington and husband Jeff of Newport, Christy Edwards and husband Harley of Newport and Charles Samuel Tomlinson of Newport; grandchildren, Trey Pittman, Hannah Edwards, Connor Edwards and Scott Covington and fianc Emily Baynton; special friend, Glen Riggs of Newport. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 7:00 p.m. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
