Mr. Freeman was born August 1, 1923, to Charles Huggins Freeman and Blanche Davis Freeman of Morehead City. He was a lifetime resident of the town of his birth. A graduate of Morehead City High School in 1940, he moved on to Campbell College to finish his education. As WWII brought the U.S. into war, he volunteered and joined the United States Marines Corps, and served until wars end. After the war, he returned to Morehead City, and worked in his fathers business known as Freeman Bros Grocery, in downtown Morehead City. Soon after, he married Jean Odom. They had two sons, Tom and Jeff. He started his own business known as Freemans Supermarket and operated that grocery business until the early 70s. Afterwards, he worked for Blue Bell Corp for about 15 years until his retirement. Charles was a member of the American Legion for over 70 years and a Mason of the Ocean Lodge #405 of Morehead City for over 70 years. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church, a church he loved and served his entire life. In later years, he volunteered to help Habitat for Humanity in Carteret County and businesses and residents would remember him for selling barbecue for churches in town. Charles will be remembered as an ordinary man with extraordinary gifts. He was welcoming and grateful for life. A man who dearly loved his God and family. Always a gentleman with a smile. A good man and life well lived. Rest in Peace. He is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Freeman and wife Mary Elizabeth of Wilmington, and Jeffrey S.
