Charles Jones

June 18, 1953 — April 27, 2014

Obituary Charles Stanley Jones, 60, of Smyrna, NC, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 27, 2014, in Wilmington, NC, after a brief illness. Charles was born in Morehead City, NC, on June 18, 1953, to Mrs. Eileen Pake Jones and the late David Edward Jones, of Beaufort. Charles is survived by his wife, Janie Miller Jones, his sister Joyce Jones Wheatly (husband Claude Wheatly III), of Beaufort, brother David E. Jones, Jr., (wife Susan Garner Jones), of Smyrna, as well as his nephews David Jones, Chris Jones, Robby Wheatly, and Charles Wheatly. Charles is also survived by his girls, Molly and Emma. Charles graduated from East Carteret High School where he was active in scouting and received his Eagle Scout Award. He is also a graduate of East Carolina University. After a summer internship in Costa Rica, he began work with the Carteret County Planning Department. He later moved on to the North Carolina Office of Coastal Management, where he rose to the position as Director of the Department until his retirement in 2009. Upon his retirement Charles was awarded The Order of the Longleaf Pine by the Governor of North Carolina. Charles served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center on Harkers Island. Charles also served on the Outer Banks Scenic Byways Committee and the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Charles was a respected leader and advocate for issues relating to the coast of North Carolina, even after his retirement. In his personal life Charles was known as a caring, trusting friend to all he met. From his home facing Core Sound in the Downeast community of Tusk, he and Janie graciously hosted a constant parade of family and friends. Charles relished sharing his love of Core Banks and Cape Lookout, good times on his houseboat, running the banks on high tide in his skiff, sharing his love of good food especially local seafood - and grilling hamburgers on the beach for everybody who came by to visit. To the children of his friends, Uncle Charles was who they looked to for fun times on the water. To his friends, he was always there, always smiling, always caring, steady on. When problems got blown out of proportion, he was quick to remind us that, in the end, it dont matter. Charles Jones will be missed by many.
