Carl Fred Sepmeyer, 96, of Morehead City, North Carolina passed away peacefully surrounded by his children, his music and his books on Friday, June 7, 2024. He was a man of faith throughout his life who loved God, his family, his country, his community and nature.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Havelock.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church.  A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the service.  Burial will follow at 1:30 pm at Gethsemane Memorial Park with military honors. (700 NC-24, Newport, NC)

His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he lived it with conviction and grace. He passed those qualities along to his children and touched the lives of many through his work with the church. He was the last founding member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Havelock. Built in 1960, he played a pivotal role in the church's development.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church for a landscape project to benefit the church grounds.

He was a man of knowledge whose love of books and pursuit of learning led him to the University of Illinois, graduating in 1950. His studies and love of nature allowed him to ‘read’ any field or patch of woods he walked through, know the plant names, and understand the condition of the birds, trees and flowers he encountered along the way.

Following his graduation, Carl honorably served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. His time in the service instilled in him a profound sense of duty and loyalty which guided him throughout his life.

He met the love of his life, Viola Gieseke at a dude ranch in Bandera, Texas where they danced and rode horses together. He married his “Bandera sweetheart” and were married for 65 years, until her passing into God’s arms. They raised a son and a daughter in the loving home life that they built together.

After his military service he embarked on a long and successful career as an insurance agent with New York Life Insurance Company where he helped people in the community protect their loved ones and their financial futures for over 62 years.

Carl was known not only for his professional achievements but also for his community service, including as a longtime supporter of the Future Farmers of America. He was a parent volunteer when his son was a Boy Scout and a Girl Scout service unit team volunteer leader for his Girl Scout daughter.

He was a Master Gardener and often advised others how to care for their outdoor plants. He shared bulbs from his flower-filled yard with friends, neighbors and his church. He often took flowers to those he interacted with around town, such as the Morehead City Post office staff, his physician, church members and many neighbors.

Carl and Viola were local square dance club members for many years, dancing locally and at national and international conventions. They both enjoyed the exercise and the fellowship of the square dance community.

Carl brought his kindness, intelligence, work ethic and spirited personality into every aspect of his life. He will be remembered for his warm smile, generous heart, and unwavering integrity. Carl's legacy is one of love, service, and loyalty and it will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.

Carl is survived by his son, Aruthur Carl Sepmeyer and wife, Atsuko of Redondo Beach, CA; daughter, Eileen Dunlap and husband, David of Charlotte, NC; grandson, Evan Sepmeyer and wife, Alexis of Torrance, CA and; granddaughter, Lauren Dunlap of Charlotte, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Bertha Sepmeyer; his beloved wife, Viola Sepmeyer; and his sister, Ruth Caswell of Collinsville, Illinois.

As we bid farewell to Carl Sepmeyer, we celebrate a life well-lived. His memory will be kept alive by his loving family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Carl’s journey on this earth has concluded, but his spirit will forever be a guiding light to those he leaves behind.
