Billie Jean Huling

Obituary Billie Jean Cunningham Huling, 94, of Morehead City, died July 8, 2020 at Carolina East Medical Center. She was born in Big Stone Gap, VA, and moved to Kingsport, TN to work during World War II. She married Porter B. Huling, Jr. in 1953 and moved to Airy Hall Plantation in Green Pond, SC. In 1960 they moved to Asheville, NC, and in 1965 to Morehead City, NC. In her teen years she worked exclusively with pre-school children in Sunday School assisting with their religion lessons and music. During this period of time, she also sang in the church choir; and substituted as a Sunday School teacher of young women at a local church. She received her education from the Whitney School of Business, Carteret Community College and East Carolina University. Afterwards, she went on to work as a legal secretary for 12 years and as a Program Services Coordinator at Carteret Community College for 15 years. After retirement she returned to work half-time at the college as a receptionist, completing a total of 24 years at the College. Billie was active in the literary arts of Carteret County, volunteering her time to teach classes and work with students on a one-to-one basis in critiquing their work and helping get their work published. She was instrumental in planning workshops in the literary arts, especially poetry. Her own literary work often included inspirational poetry and historical fiction. She authored two books, 'The Lore and Lure of the Coastal Banks', a book of poetry, and 'Beneath of Devils Nose', a historical novel. Mrs. Huling once said, "It would be rewarding to be remembered as an optimistic person, one who used her God-given gifts wisely and well.' Per her wishes, there will be no service. She was predeceased by her parents, John B. Cunningham and Ruth Smith Cunningham; a sister, Ferne Cunningham Austin; and niece, Judy Austin. Mrs. Huling is survived by two sons, Robin C Huling of Emerald Isle; and M. Ross Huling of Greensboro; and three great-nephews.
