Obituary Barbara Louise Buckwalter, 94, of Newport, died Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Crystal Coast Hospice House. A graveside service with military honors, will take place 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville. Mrs. Buckwalter was born in Chicago, IL to Walter and Helen Staley. She served her country during World War II in the U.S. Army as a Registered Nurse. She was a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC. She accepted a commission as a 2ndLt in the Army Nurse Corps and deployed with the 38th Evacuation Hospital Unit from Charlotte to North Africa and Italy in 1942 for the duration of the war. Married for 58 years, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed dearly. She is survived by her daughter, Martha B. Melin and husband, Mark, of Newport; a brother, Thomas Wingo, of Wilmette, IL; grandchildren, Justin Melin, of Newport, Michael Melin, of Newport, Heidi Schuh of Dixon, MO, Kurt Alexander Buckwalter, of Fullerton, CA, Elizabeth B. Jones, of Warwick, RI. In addition to her parents, her husband, Colonel Paul Everett Buckwalter and a son, Kurt Edward Buckwalter, and a sister Elizabeth Drayer preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O.
