Obituary Anne Fiske Long artist, teacher, mother, homemaker died Friday, May 31 at her home in Newport. She was surrounded by her family husband Wesley Long, daughter Manda and son Wyatt. She was 70, and died from the effects of lung cancer. A service of remembrance is scheduled for Monday, June 3 at 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist church in Morehead, where Anne was an active member. A celebration of Annes life is being planned for later in the summer. Anne MacMaster Codman Fiske was born in Cambridge, Mass., and spent her early years there; in Ames, Iowa; and Washington, D.C. In 1957, her father joined the U.S. foreign service, and over the next decade the family lived in Asia (Bangladesh), Europe (Germany) and Africa (Congo). After graduating high school at Milton (Mass.) Academy, Anne attended Antioch College, graduating in 1971. She was a print maker and painter, studying at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the University of Idaho, while also working for the Appaloosa Horse Club in Mosco, before earning her MFA from the University of Washington. While raising a family with her husband, an artist and professional craftsman, Anne continued painting, including commissions for several public art murals, and held a number of jobs, including eight-years with The Weekly, an alternative newspaper serving Seattle. The family moved to North Carolina in 1998, and Anne taught art for 13 years in the local public schools, as she continued to paint, show and sell her work. Most recently, Anne taught art appreciation at Coastal Carolina in Jacksonville, NC. She retired in 2018. Survivors in addition to her immediate family include her daughter in law Hana Chmielewski, her sister Lindsay, brother Jonathan and twin brother Fred; five nieces and nephews; six grand-nieces and -nephews, and many beloved cousins. Contributions in memory of Anne may be made to Carteret County Humane Society, 853 Hibbs Road, Newport.
