Obituary Ann Carolyn Tomlinson Hale, 74, of Apex, departed this life on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in her daughter's home in Apex, NC after a brave battle with endometrial cancer. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, Morehead City, NC with the Rev. Timothy Havlicek and the Rev. Jack Lee officiating. Mrs. Hale was born October 17, 1942, in Lynchburg, VA to Astor Theodore Tomlinson and Mary Ellen Tanner Tomlinson. She grew up on a dairy farm in Big Island, VA at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She graduated as class valedictorian from Big Island High School in 1960. During the summer of 1963 she had the privilege of attending the Baptist World Youth Conference in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1964, she graduated from Lynchburg College with a BA in English. She graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville with a Master of Education in Counseling in 1968. She married Peter Roberts Hale on November 30, 1968. Mrs. Hale was the Guidance Director at Rustburg High School (VA) and Washington Senior High School (MD); School Counselor at William Campbell High School (VA), Southport Elementary School (NC), Denton Elementary School (NC) and lastly Beaufort Middle School (NC). She spent 38 years as a Guidance Director and/or School Counselor before she retired in 2009. Mrs. Hale was a beautiful and extraordinary lady who excelled at listening. She was very interested in those around her and made friends everywhere she went. Her sweet disposition often hid a super sharp wit and a propensity to correct grammar. Her handwriting was exceptional and she loved calligraphy. She was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She leaves behind her wonderful, faithful daughter Mary-Anna Frances Hale DeSoto and husband, Michael, of Apex, NC; sisters, Gail Tomlinson Wilcher and husband, David, of Bedford, VA, Mona Tomlinson Kanode, and husband, Kenny, of Big Island, VA; grandchildren, Ranleigh Astor DeSoto, Claire Effie DeSoto and Avery Elwain DeSoto; Numerous Special Nieces and Nephews; and additionally survived by Catherine Rameau Degdag and husband, Aziz, and their children, Emile, Noah and Marie, all of Germany.
