Ann Culley

Obituary Ann Culley died August 3, 2015 at her home in Beaufort, North Carolina. She was born in 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia and spent her childhood in Atlanta and Columbia, South Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of Catherine Mason Culley and granddaughter of Catherine Howell Mason. Ann attended the University of Georgia and Georgia State University and then pursued her doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was on the faculty of the English departments of Georgia State, Middle Georgia University, and St. Mary's College in Raleigh. Ann began a new career in her forties and became a family therapist and substance abuse counselor in Raleigh where she worked with Wake County Alcohol Treatment Center and also had a private practice. She retired to Beaufort in the mid-90's and enjoyed restoring historic houses and creating her popular Steampunk jewelry. Ann is survived by her wife Nancy Rains with whom she shared 31 wonderful years. She was especially close to Nancy's parents Thelma Noe Rains and Floyd Rains. She is also survived by Sonny and Ann Rains, their children and grandchildren, and so many loving friends who delighted in Ann's erudite wit and depended on her for wise and compassionate guidance.
