Andrew Turney

February 26, 1925 — February 5, 2016

Obituary Andrew Carney Turney , age 90, of Pine Knoll Shores , passed away peacefully at home the evening of Friday, February 5, surrounded by loved ones. Andy was born to the late Aline Fredericks Turney and Andrew Carney Turney, Sr. in Ford City, PA on February 26, 1925. Andy also had an older sister, Nancy Clair, now deceased. Andy grew up in New Kensington, PA. He played all sports at New Kensington High School but excelled in basketball, for which he received a scholarship to Washington & Jefferson College. In 1943 Andy joined the Navy and reached the rank of Gunners Mate 2nd Class, serving on the SS MacDougal during World War ll. Andy's adult working career was first with Allstate Insurance Company in all capacities, beginning in California and then to the Cleveland Ohio area. In 1968 he formed his own insurance agency, also in the Cleveland area, retiring in 1985. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Margery, moved to Pine Knoll Shores to begin realizing all the wonderful things available to them. Andy's two dreams as a child were to grow up to be a cowboy and/or a fireman. Unfortunately the first wish never reached reality but the second one did. Very shortly after settling in Pine Knoll Shores he joined the volunteer fire department. Andy was an active member for 21 years, reaching the rank of Chief. Along the way, other part time jobs presented themselves to Andy; some volunteer, some with a bit of financial stimulant. Among them were "tennis pro" at Bogue Banks Country Club, first maintenance person for the Town of Pine Knoll Shores (thanks to Commissioner Evan Roderick's appointment), property manager of Genesis Condominiums, and deliverer of the Tideland News and the Weekly magazine for Carteret Publishing Company to designated drop-offs. Andy was a past president of PIKSCO Homeowners Association and also a past president of Bogue Banks Country Club Tennis Association. In his spare time Andy pursued his love of playing tennis at Spooners Creek Racquet Club as well as BBCC. At one time he travelled the state participating in sanctioned tournaments, rising to NUMBER 2 in the 65 years and over men's doubles with partner Jim Johnson. He also ranked NUMBER 2 in the state with his wife Margery in the 60 years and over mixed doubles. It wasn't until two years ago he retired his racquet. Another passion was hooking up the pop-up camper to the conversion van to travel our beautiful country as well as much of Canada. It was great fun to be able to say, "Oh yes, we've been there". Andy has CROSSED THE BAR, but as a beloved husband, father, stepfather and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of forty years Margery Martin Fern Turney. He was pre-deceased by his son Andrew, Jr. (wife, Linda) and is survived by three children, Fran Frame (Jim), Jennifer Gorham (Jack), and Amy Duke. His stepchildren Norton Fern (Patty), Janney Warren (David), Virginia Federer (Larry), Margery Ashmun (Bob), and Carol Fern. Twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A life well lived. A man well loved.
