Obituary Alvah James Goodwin, Sr., 97, of Cedar Island, passed away peacefully at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay in Sea Level on Monday, March 2, 2015. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who always had a smile on his face when you walked in the room. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Cedar Island United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darcy Knight officiating. The interment will follow at Cedar Island Community Cemetery. Alvah James was born on May 14, 1917 in Roe, NC to the late Lewis and Julia Goodwin. He ultimately retired from the North Carolina Ferry Division after 20 years of dedicated service where he ended his career working as a Quartermaster. Prior to his passing, he was the oldest living resident of Cedar Island. One of his greatest pleasures in life was teaching his grandchildren and the young men of Cedar Island how to mend nets and live off the water. Affectionately known to many as Pop, he was a vital part of the community of Cedar Island and a member of the Cedar Island United Methodist Church. His grandchildren were the light of his life. He married the love of his life, Alice Emory, in April of 1940. Together they raised four children. He is survived by his sister, Lois Goodwin of Cedar Island; daughter, Judy Daniels of Cedar Island; son, James Goodwin and wife Rachel of Cedar Island; daughter, Virginia Moore of Harkers Island; and son, Louis Soddy Goodwin of Cedar Island. He is also survived by grandchildren, Becky and Doc Saunders of Atlantic, Carol and Lester Gray Murphy of Cedar Island, Michael and Rosemary Daniels of Cedar Island, Alice and Mark Buffalo of Newport, Jamie and Lisa Chadwick of Beaufort, Jeff Goodwin of Cedar Island, Eugene Edward and April Chadwick of Gloucester, Steve Goodwin of Beaufort, Josh Goodwin of Savannah, GA, Kelly and Eric Gann of Carlsbad, CA, Christa and Stephen Brown of Mill Creek; as well as 21 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Alice Goodwin; sister, Mildred Sissy Bradt; son-in-law, Neil Daniels; and son-in-law, Charles Moore.
