April 16, 1926 — April 13, 2017

Obituary Alice Mills Stewart Windley, 90, of Beaufort, died Thursday April 13, 2017 at Carteret Health Care. A funeral service will be held Monday April 17, 2017 at Ann Street United Methodist Church at 11am with the pastor, the Rev. Taylor Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Windley was born April 16, 1926, in Craven County to Floyd Walter Stewart and Alice Mills Stewart. She was the 7th child born into the family. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1943 and received an Associate Degree as an Executive Secretary from Queens College in Charlotte. She met her husband while working at Cherry Point in 1945 and married him after only 3 dates. They adored each other and were married over 60 years and were truly an example to their family of what a devoted couple should be. They were dedicated parents to their 3 children and both worked very hard to provide for their family and to send all 3 children to college. Alice worked for both Ann Street UMC and First Baptist Church in Beaufort as secretary. She retired from the Federal Government after working over 22 years for the US Department of Agriculture. Together she and her husband enjoyed retirement by becoming "Snow Birds" and spending the winters at their second home in Bonita Springs, Florida. She was a member of Ann Street UMC where she sang in the choir for over 40 years and was on numerous boards throughout her life at the church and at the state level of the Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Beaufort. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were delighted to call her "Granny" and she was special to each one. She shared her talents and strength with her family and they will cherish their memories of her forever. She is survived by a daughter Anita W. Hardesty of Beaufort; two sons Kenneth N. Windley, Jr. and wife Gayle of Lumberton, Royal B. Windley and wife Susan of West End; six grandchildren, Jerry Hardesty Jr. and wife Sheila of New Bern, Caroline H.
