Al Huff

June 17, 1928 — December 22, 2017

Obituary Al Huff, 89, of Morehead City, died December 22, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018, at 11:00 AM at St. Egbert Catholic Church, with the pastor, Rev. Thomas R. Davis, officiating. Al was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on June 17, 1928, to Earl and Evelyn Johnson Huff. After high school, he proudly served his country during WW II in the U. S. Navy. He worked briefly for an oil company in Tulsa, Oklahoma; but the timber trade swiftly became Als vocation. He devoted his entire career to the wood business. On July 2, 1960, Al married the love of his life, Helen Duffy, in Dubuque, Iowa. His career took him, Helen and their two children to live in several different places within the U. S. and abroad, including a remote island in the South Pacific, Savaii, Western Samoa. Returning stateside, Al and Helen settled in Morehead City, where he worked for Atlantic Veneer Corporation for nearly 30 years, until his retirement. His colleagues and the U.S. Forestry Service viewed Al as an expert in his field. In his spare time, Al enjoyed fishing, playing golf, scuba diving, and watching sports especially Panthers football! An avid motorcycle rider, Al took to the road on his favorite bikes well into his 70s. He loved animals, a good joke, and fine dining. However, his greatest enjoyment in all that he did was spending time with his family, especially his five grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Huff; daughter, Kathy Huff, and husband, David Beittel, of San Leandro, CA; son, Mark Huff, and wife, Kendall, of Matthews, NC; sister, Claudine King, and husband, Charles; 5 grandchildren, Addison Huff, Logan Huff, Olivia Huff, Chloe Beittel and Alice Beittel. In addition to his parents, Al is preceded in death by his brothers, Earl Huff, Jr. and James Huff, and 4 sisters, Virginia Barron, Emma Leah Stone, Grace Johns and Earline Mashburn. A special thank you from the Huff family to the doctors and staff at Carteret Healthcare and the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House for their compassionate care.
