Nancy Derrickson Taylor Pace

Obituary Nancy Derrickson Taylor Pace, 87, passed away suddenly on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Carteret Health Care Medical Center in Morehead City. Her service is set for 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 19th at Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead City and will be officiated by the Rev. C. Thomas Midyette III. Interment will immediately follow at nearby Bayside Cemetery. Nancy was born November 1, 1931 in Norfolk, Virginia. She came to Carteret County at a young age, the only child of a hotelier who managed and operated the landmark Atlantic Beach Hotel then located on the Atlantic Beach "circle." She attended Saint Marys College in Raleigh before marrying Nelson W. Taylor III of Beaufort, North Carolina. During nearly 27 years of marriage, she had three sons, all of whom live in the local area and were by her side when she died. Nancy married Dr. Karl Pace, Jr. in November 1986 and moved from Morehead City to a house on "The Straits" waterway in Gloucester. For nearly 30 years, they traveled extensively and enjoyed exploring wildlife sanctuaries together before Karl passed away on June 28, 2013. Nancy was a wonderful, loving mother and will be remembered for her passion for all things associated with the seaturtles, sea gulls, dolphins, and even homely eels and crabs. She also had a lifelong fondness for ocean swimming. Her sons recall the many times they witnessed her dive through the breakers in front of the Dunes Club and proceed to swim gracefully long distances beyond the shoreline to the great admiration of friends and strangers alike. She was in her element during these ocean swims; it was where she found solace and rejuvenation. Even as she struggled with physical afflictions in recent years, Nancy retained her wry sense of humor and love of coastal living. She embraced her dedicated caregivers who daily came to her home as family. They were also by her side the day of her deatha testament to the loving relationships she has shared with so many during the course of her remarkable life. Nancy is survived by her three sons, Walter Derrickson Taylor, Nelson Whitford Taylor IV, and Bayard Beckwith Taylor, as well as five grandchildren.
