Martin John Quante, Jr.

December 7, 1941 — March 22, 2024

Martin John Quante, Jr., affectionately known as John or Johnny, peacefully passed March 22, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in Morehead City, North Carolina.

He was born to Laree and Martin John Quante, Sr. on December 7, 1941 in Savannah, Georgia. John was the cherished husband of Gail Hallman Quante for over sixty years. “Johnny”, as he was affectionately known by his family, had an idyllic childhood growing up on the river and marsh surrounding Isle of Hope, Georgia. He spent hours in his boat fishing, crabbing, hunting and building camps on the numerous nearby islands.

John married the love of his life, Gail Meree Hallman, August 17, 1963 and while honeymooning in Dallas, Texas they decided to make it their home. Drawn back to the water, they chose Washington, North Carolina in 1971 to build a home and raise their young daughters. They returned briefly to Dallas for four years, before moving back to Washington in 1983. They discovered wonderful fishing at Harkers Island, NC in 1985 and eventually built a second home on the island in 1988. John and Gail moved to Morehead City, NC in 1997 and established a home in Port St. Lucie, Florida in 2001. They have enjoyed many years and great friendships there as well. John and Gail created a life filled with love and laughter for their family and anyone who was fortunate enough to befriend them.

John was a devoted father to Christine (Lionel) Quante, Todd and Aimee (Ken) Wrangell and a doting grandfather to Ryan and Martin-Maine.  John was an outdoor enthusiast, often found hunting in his early years with Gail and other family members. Fishing became his favorite pastime with Gail and the girls always by his side. Being a lover of boats, John and Gail could be found on the North Carolina waters of either the Pamlico River, Pungo River, Cape Lookout or Shackelford Banks. He instilled his love of the water, fishing and the outdoors in both of his grandchildren as well.

A service to honor John's life will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 215 Ann Street, Beaufort, NC. A reception at the church will follow to share stories and cherished memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Home Health & Hospice in Carteret County, NC and/or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

John will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. His warmth, great sense of humor, wisdom, and the joy he brought to every gathering will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Condolences and life tributes may be sent to the family at www.noebrooks.net.
