George Beswick

Obituary George William Pete Beswick, 73, of Morehead City, North Carolina, died November 16, after a sudden illness. He was born July 29, 1941 in Newport, Rhode Island, but lived in NC for 50 years and considered himself to be a southerner by choice and not by accident of birth. He attended Punahou Academy in Hawaii, and joined the US Army at age 17 where he served five years and was a member of the Special Forces. After being wounded in Vietnam he left the service and moved to Chapel Hill, NC where he worked as a foreign car mechanic honing mechanical skills that served him all life. At age 29 he entered the University of North Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English, Phi Beta Kappa, and a law degree completing both in five years. Pete served as Assistant District Attorney in Greensboro, NC where his aggressive prosecutorial tactics instigated the Beswick Buzz Saw Award. Beth, Pete and Michael moved to Morehead City in 1979 where he was an Assistant District Attorney, then established a private practice. He formed Beswick and Goines with his law partner Doug Goines in 2001. He served on the Board of the Friends of NC Maritime Museum Beaufort, was past Chair of the Carteret County Airport Authority and past President of the Carteret County Aviation Association, EAA Chapter 1523. Pete always had an avocation that he pursued with passion including racing cars, motorcycles and sailboats, sport fishing, golf and finally, flying. He became an avid pilot after obtaining his private pilot license in 2001 and later an instrument rating, seaplane rating and spin certification. His dedication to introducing young people to flying through the EAA Young Eagles program was inspiring. Pete and Beth opened their home to Morehead City Marlins college baseball players for four summers as a host home. Pete treasured the values of honesty, integrity and loyalty. He often advocated for and defended those who least could afford it and quietly served others behind the scenes. His favorite times were spent with Beth entertaining friends at home or hanging out at the airport telling tales and tinkering on his airplane. His sense of humor, wit and constant teasing were an unending source of entertainment and laughter. Pete is survived by his wife of 35 years, Beth Dortch Beswick, his son Michael Sean Beswick of Wilmington, North Carolina, a niece Crystal Burchard of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, two half-brothers Alan Beswick of Pensacola, Florida and Jack Smith of Tucson, Arizona. Pete is further survived by three god children, Jerry Coates III, Anderson Coates and Anne Barnard whom he adored. Pete was preceded in death by his brother, Chris Murch, step-father Robert Murch, mother Faith Murch, father William Reid Beswick. A celebration of life service will be held Friday, November 21, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, Salter Path, NC, Highway 58 between mile marker 10 and 10.5. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall and friends are encouraged to come to the house after the reception.
